»One-stop-shop« for ultrasonics - measuring, simulating, testing

The Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems IKTS from Dresden develops customer-specific ultrasonic testing systems, components and algorithms, validates ultrasonic methods and offers testing services. At Control Virtuell 2021, Fraunhofer IKTS will present the new developments of the PCUS® pro device family, which is optimized for fast automated and, if required, robot-assisted testing in metal processing as well as in the fields of railroad and automotive construction, power plant or even wind power technology.

Hardware and software for ultrasonic testing

The PCUS® pro series combines the comprehensive IKTS competences to an effective modular top electronics for ultrasonic testing according to DIN EN 12668 and DIN EN ISO 18563. The platform enables NDT during production, maintenance or in the testing laboratory by conventional ultrasonic methods as well as by phased array techniques. If desired, it can be expanded to include eddy current capabilities, enabling the combined use of eddy-current and ultrasonics on a common hardware and software basis.

Automated ultrasonic testing with high test frequencies up to 100 MHz.

The latest generation includes the PCUS® pro HF ultrasonic front end - a compact high-frequency ultrasonic electronic system. It is used when high testing frequencies of up to 100 MHz are required, for example in the automated testing of thin sheets, composite materials, joints or electronic components. Designed as a USB front end, it can be connected to any Windows PC, laptop or tablet computer.

Augmented reality supports ultrasonic testing

The add-on for the devices of the PCUS® family enables 3D visualization of the test results. For this purpose, the real test data is projected onto the real test specimen using Microsoft Hololens. This novel visualization is viewing-angle and motion stable and can be adapted for almost all ultrasonic testing applications. The simplified representation enables a more intuitive interpretation of the test data.
